Global nitrogen and phosphate in urban wastewater for the period 1970 to 2050
This paper presents estimates for global N and P emissions from sewage for the period 1970-2050 for the four Millennium Ecosystem Assessment scenarios. Using country-specific projections for population and economic growth, urbanization, development of sewage systems, and wastewater treatment installations, a rapid increase in global sewage emissions is predicted, from 6.4 Tg of N and 1.3 Tg of P per year in 2000 to 12.0-15.5 Tg of N and 2.4-3.1 Tg of P per year in 2050. While North America (strong increase), Oceania (moderate increase), Europe (decrease), and North Asia (decrease) show contrasting developments, in the developing countries, sewage N and P discharge will likely increase by a factor of 2.5 to 3.5 between 2000 and 2050. This is a combined effect of increasing population, urbanization, and development of sewage systems. Even in optimistic scenarios for the development of wastewater treatment systems, global N and P flows are not likely to declin
Maurice Hall Haycock (1900-1988)
Maurice Haycock, mineralogist, geologist, photographer, musician, painter, historian, radio operator, died in Ottawa on December 23, 1988, at the age of 88 years. ... [Haycock is remembered for his many talents and achievements including receiving the Massey Medal from the Royal Canadian Geographical Society in 1980, receiving an Honourary Doctorate of Civil Laws degree from Acadia University in 1986 and the display, at Acadia, of a retrospective exhibition of more than 80 of his arctic paintings. A collection of his paintings resides at the University of Saskatchewan.
Theory and experiment of the ESR of Co in Zn % (OH)PO and Mg(OH)AsO
Experiments of Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) were performed on Co
substituting Zn or Mg in powder samples of Zn(OH)PO and
Mg(OH)AsO. The observed resonances are described with a theoretical
model that considers the departures from the two perfect structures. It is
shown that the resonance in the penta-coordinated complex is allowed, and the
crystal fields that would describe the resonance of the Co in the two
environments are calculated. The small intensity of the resonance in the
penta-coordinated complex is explained assuming that this site is much less
populated than the octahedral one; this assumption was verified by a molecular
calculation of the energies of the two environments, with both Co and Zn as

A Compact Semi-Lumped Tunable Complex Impedance Transformer
International audienceThis article describes the design and performance of a compact tunable impedance transformer. The structure is based on a transmission line loaded by varactor diodes. Using only two pairs of diodes, the circuit is very small with a total length of only λ/10. Both the frequency range and the load impedance can be tuned by varying the varactor bias voltages. Our design provides a tunable operating frequency range of ± 40% and an impedance match ranging from 20 Ω to 90 Ω at 0.8 GHz and from 30 Ω to 170 Ω at 1.5 GHz. In addition, a new approach that considers losses for the simulation and measurement of this impedance transformer was investigated. The measured performance of a 1 GHz prototype design confirmed the validity of this new approach
Fusion ARTMAP: Clarification, Implementation and Developments
This report claims to clarify how the fusion ARTMAP neural network operates. Here we explore the case of multiple-input sensors with single-teacher channel architecture and RT sensor models using independent baseline vigilance parameter. Two similar algorithms have been interpreted and implemented from the fusion ARTMAP architecture proposed by Asfour et al [1], [2]. One uses unsupervised Fuzzy ART [3] modules to form a compressed code within each channel before activation of a global recognition code. The other generates simultaneously the compressed and the global, recognition codes. The latter algorithm seems more closely to resemble the fusion ARTMAP architecture as set out in [1],[2]. Simulations are shown and compared with Fuzzy ARTMAP [5]
Microbiological influences on fracture surfaces of intact mudstone and the implications for geological disposal of radioactive waste
The significance of the potential impacts of microbial activity on the transport properties of host rocks for geological repositories is an area of active research. Most recent work has focused on granitic environments. This paper describes pilot studies investigating changes in transport properties that are produced by microbial activity in sedimentary rock environments in northern Japan. For the first time, these short experiments (39 days maximum) have shown that the denitrifying bacteria, Pseudomonas denitrificans, can survive and thrive when injected into flow-through column experiments containing fractured diatomaceous mudstone and synthetic groundwater under pressurized conditions. Although there were few significant changes in the fluid chemistry, changes in the permeability of the biotic column, which can be explained by the observed biofilm formation, were quantitatively monitored. These same methodologies could also be adapted to obtain information from cores originating from a variety of geological environments including oil reservoirs, aquifers and toxic waste disposal sites to provide an understanding of the impact of microbial activity on the transport of a range of solutes, such as groundwater contaminants and gases (e.g. injected carbon dioxide)

La inclusión de la perspectiva de género en la actividad jurisdiccional es una demanda sostenida de los colectivos feministas y de mujeres, dado que las sentencias tienen un poder performativo y envían un mensaje a la sociedad: “[…] tienen un poder individual y colectivo que impactan en la vida de las personas y conforman la identidad del poder judicial como un actor imprescindible en la construcción de un Estado democrático de derecho” (Suprema Corte de Justicia de la Nación, 2013:7). La incorporación de la perspectiva de género viene a garantizar la igualdad de posiciones (Kessler, 2014) entre mujeres y varones como una meta, trascendiendo la mera igualdad de oportunidades que hasta el presente se ha demostrado insuficiente para que las mujeres consigamos una ciudadanía plena. Al momento de incorporar la perspectiva de género en las sentencias, quienes juzgan deben tener presente en primer lugar, el impacto diferenciado de las normas en base al sexo de las personas. En segundo lugar, la interpretación y aplicación de las leyes en relación con (y en base a) estereotipos de género. Si, por ejemplo, quienes imparten justicia no tienen presentes los estereotipos de género vigentes detrás de las violaciones a los derechos humanos de las mujeres, si no los detectan ni cuestionan, entonces los reproducen. Tal como sostiene Scott (1996) el género es una categoría imprescindible para el análisis social. En tercer lugar, al momento del juzgamiento, se deben tener en cuenta las exclusiones legitimadas por la ley por pensar el mundo en términos binarios y androcéntricos; en cuarto lugar, la distribución no equitativa de recursos y poder que opera entre varones y mujeres en el marco de una organización social patriarcal, y, por último, el trato diferenciado por género legitimado por las propias leyes.Eje 3: Tramas violentas y espacios de exclusión.Instituto de Cultura Jurídic
Microbial impacts of CO2 transport in Sherwood Sandstone
Work carried out by BGS and the Japan Atomic Energy Authority (JAEA) has shown that microbial processes can have profound effects on the transport properties of host rock (i.e. the movement of fluids and contaminants through the host material) relevant to radioactive waste disposal. Recent research, performed as part of the BGS Radtran project, has examined Sherwood Sandstone samples in the context of radioactive waste disposal; this particular formation is also a potential reservoir for carbon dioxide storage in the UK. As part of the BGS opportunities fund programme, this project has, for the first time, evaluated interactions between fluids saturated with carbon dioxide/Sherwood Sandstone/microbes (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) in transport experiments, using BGS developed apparatus under pressurised subsurface conditions. This pilot study has highlighted the impacts of differences in the physical characteristics of core Sherwood Sandstone samples collected adjacent to each other in a core sample, and the ability of P. aeruginosa to survive in CO2 saturated artificial groundwater and the potential to form a biofilm in an environment suitable likely to be found at a carbon capture and storage location. These results demonstrate that in this short study, the injection of P. aeruginosa into the biotic experiment does not appear to impact on the physical transport properties of the Sherwood Sandstone, although the presence of CO2 appears to enhance the mobilisation of a number of chemical species. However, in other work which utilised the same organism and rock type but without introduction of CO2 saturated fluid, post-inoculation injection changes were observed. These included short but rapid saw-tooth like changes in the pressure profile (Wragg et al, 2012). These impacts were not observed in the current study which suggests that the CO2 saturated fluid was impacting on the ability of the microbes to alter permeability. This short study has, however, indicated the need to carry out longer term investigations to reproduce these initial findings
Locally Perturbed Random Walks with Unbounded Jumps
In \cite{SzT}, D. Sz\'asz and A. Telcs have shown that for the diffusively
scaled, simple symmetric random walk, weak convergence to the Brownian motion
holds even in the case of local impurities if . The extension of their
result to finite range random walks is straightforward. Here, however, we are
interested in the situation when the random walk has unbounded range.
Concretely we generalize the statement of \cite{SzT} to unbounded random walks
whose jump distribution belongs to the domain of attraction of the normal law.
We do this first: for diffusively scaled random walks on having finite variance; and second: for random walks with distribution
belonging to the non-normal domain of attraction of the normal law. This result
can be applied to random walks with tail behavior analogous to that of the
infinite horizon Lorentz-process; these, in particular, have infinite variance,
and convergence to Brownian motion holds with the superdiffusive scaling.Comment: 16 page
Black-Scholes option pricing within Ito and Stratonovich conventions
Options financial instruments designed to protect investors from the stock
market randomness. In 1973, Fisher Black, Myron Scholes and Robert Merton
proposed a very popular option pricing method using stochastic differential
equations within the Ito interpretation. Herein, we derive the Black-Scholes
equation for the option price using the Stratonovich calculus along with a
comprehensive review, aimed to physicists, of the classical option pricing
method based on the Ito calculus. We show, as can be expected, that the
Black-Scholes equation is independent of the interpretation chosen. We
nonetheless point out the many subtleties underlying Black-Scholes option
